Mental health is an integral and essential component of health.

Sahan Mental Health Care Hospital is Somaliland’s first psychiatric mental health facility offering a total solution to people suffering with mental illnesses. Our programs range from short term to long term out patient and in-patient treatment. We offer recovery that sustains clients requiring longer term treatment boasting a 70 percent success rate as measured by clients recovering fully equipped for life. Registered with MoH Somaliland, the centre enjoys relationships with international facilities to remain abreast of latest developments in mental health care. Sahan Hospital strives to promote complete healing through a comprehensive acute, sub-acute and reintegration programme.

 

Sahan Mental Health Hospital was established in 2005, and currently is the one of National Referral Mental Health Institution in the Country. The hospital provides general and specialized mental health treatment for mental health patients and is a teaching hospital for mental health specialists.

The Hospital is located in Hargeisa City, about 6 km North East of the Capital, and it is the biggest community owned Mental Health Hospital in Somaliland.

The patients get complete caring and curing, with beds, feeding, security and sanitation. There are doctors with different health professional like psychiatric, general physicians and specialist like Eyes, TB and dentist and others. The patient mainly come from Somaliland and other neighbouring countries like Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

The Hospital is ran by Sahan Voluntary Organization which is highly regarded respected local charity organization founded on May 2005 by Basheir Mohamed Jama, a prominent and respectful member from Somaliland societies within and outside the country, having with considerable qualification and experiences to provide subsequent fundamental human being needs (socio-economic) to the most vulnerable marginalized poorest of the poor families and their dependents; the people of concern mainly mentally handicapped people at all age and sex from all regions in and outside Somaliland to provide them health, livelihood, social and individual empowerment needs.

The Hospital provides different vocational training skills after the patients recover in good improvement or fitness to rehabilitate them. The Sahan Vocational Training Center (SVTC) gives the recovered patients with the following skills:

  • Electricity
  • Tailoring
  • Masonry
  • Al-Qur’analkariim
  • Literacy and numeracy

In the skills sectors different students have completed many times and SAHAN helps to seek job opportunities with collaborating to their families, there are many students graduated these skills whose works on their skill gained in SAHAN centers and around and in search better future life.

Our Clinical Serivces

Patient Assessment

Sahan assessment and treatment

During the FIRST assessment, the patient is seen by a mental health nurse (for comprehensive personal history), a physician (for physical health assessment), a psychologist ( for psychological assessment) , and a Psychiatrist (for recommendations regarding the treatment). Our assessments are comprehensive and this process normally takes 2-3 hours.

Emergency Assessment

Sahan Emergency and Assessment Unit

Our purpose built emergency assessment area is open 24 hours. Assessment and immediate treatment is available on all days.

Intensive Caring

Sahan Intensive Care Unit

Our purpose-built, temperature- controlled intensive care unit receives patients who are identified to be a risk to themselves or to others (aggression, violence). Patients in the ICU receive 24 hour high level observation, support, and any other necessary interventions. Depending on the needs, a patient in the ICU may be nursed constantly by 1 or 2 staff.
